US embassy explores partnership with UB

The American Embassy in Gaborone is exploring possible ways through which to forge stronger ties between the United States of America and the University of Botswana.

A delegation from the embassy comprising Ms Ineke Stoneham, Public Affairs Officer, recently met the Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris, to explore ways in which the two institutions could map out strategies for strengthening their relations.

Ms Stoneham represented Tibor Naggy, Assistant Secretary for African Affairs in the Department of State, who wants to see stronger ties between Africa and the United States of America through African and US universities partnerships.

In his remarks, Professor Norris appreciated the partnerships the University of Botswana has various American universities. He noted the Memoranda of Understanding UB signed with various institutions in the US such as the University of Pennsylvania, Michigan State University and Rutgers University.

Professor Norris said part of UB’s vision was to set up a leadership training centre particularly given the leadership challenges that Africa continued to grapple with. He observed that such a centre would serve the whole continent. In addition, he noted that UB and US universities could also collaborate to offer joint degree programmes besides collaborative research and student exchanges.
